This is a two-day Sinimay Straw Blocking Workshop, where you will make your own open weave straw hat from start to finish using sinimay straw! Students will learn the technique of hat blocking including: manipulating the straw on wooden hat forms, wiring the brim, finishing hats to the appropriate size, and basic trimming techniques.

On the first day of the workshop, Jill will demonstrate and walk students through blocking their straw hats and begin working on wiring the brims and sewing in head size ribbons. On the second day of the workshop, we will work through a variety of trimming techniques and finishing the hats.

The basic materials for blocking your hat are included in the class fee; 1.5 yards of sinimay straw and either 1 yard of silk organza or 1 yard of a contrasting sinimay straw for trimming, wire for the edge of the hats, grosgrain ribbon for finishing the head size and basic notions. Silk flowers, feathers and any additional trimmings can be purchased "a la carte" during the class.

In our best attempt to accommodate all students' stylistic preferences, we will email you a list of color options for straw / silk and additional materials that can be purchased (such as flowers or feathers) when you register for the class. *Please note that all of the materials for this class require Jill to dye them in advance and because of this, students who register after May 22nd will be limited to basic color options.

Class dates and times are:

  • Wednesday, May 29th, 10:15am - 3:00pm & Wednesday, June 5th, 10:15am - 3:00pm (lunch will be served on both days) - *Please note that this class is held in our LA Studio which is located in Studio City

Cost of the workshop: $425.00

Students are welcomed and encouraged to bring their personal sewing machines so as to learn the process of hat finishing on a machine they are familiar and comfortable working on (so you can continue on your hat-making journey from home). This class is designed for more advanced sewers, and students who have taken our intro class.
